  • Acid Reflux
  • Diverticulosis
  • Crohn’s disease

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

IBS is a disorder with a complex set of triggers, none of which would be individually sufficient to produce symptoms, but may do so when combined. Food sensitivities, unbalanced flora, and improper fermentation can set up a condition in the gut that then only takes a trigger, like emotional/physical stress or a dose of sensitive food, to cause reactions and symptoms. Natural treatment is based on the concept of ‘The Four Rs’: Remove, Replace, Re-inoculate, and Restore. We work to determine what has brought the patient to this point and then start to work on restoration.

Acid Reflux

Naturopathic doctors not only focus on relieving symptoms but also aim to treat the underlying causes of GERD. This includes addressing aspects like stomach acid production, esophageal health, the tone of the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES), and nutrient deficiencies.

Diverticulosis

Diverticulitis is small, bulging sacs or pouches of the inner lining of the intestine (diverticulosis) that become inflamed or infected. Most often, these pouches are in the large intestine (colon). The cause of these sacs, or pouches of diverticulosis to form is not clearly known, however, eating a low-fiber diet is one of the most likely causes. People who eat mostly processed food, as many Americans eat, do not get enough fiber in their diet. As a result, constipation and hard stools are more likely to occur – causing people to strain when passing stools. This increases the pressure in the colon or intestines and may cause these pouches to form.

There are multiple factors that cause diverticula to become inflamed, and they overlap with the factors that contribute to the diverticula initially forming. From my clinical experience, I see food intolerances, diet, lifestyle, microbiome imbalance, colonic motility dysfunction and stress as being the largest contributors.

Naturopathic medicine shines in treating gastrointestinal health because we treat the root cause of the disease and personalize treatments to the individual. This produces exceptional results that not only helps the patient avoid surgery and life-long pharmaceuticals but also restores the patient’s total health.

Crohn’s disease

Crohn’s disease is a chronic illness that affects the digestive system. The exact cause is unknown, though various hereditary factors likely play a major role in its development. While there is no known cure for Crohn’s disease, there are a number of effective ways to reduce symptoms and manage chronic pain. Many people find naturopathic treatments to be beneficial as an alternative to, or in conjunction with conventional medical intervention.

Naturopathic management of Crohn’s disease includes addressing the frequency and severity of inflammatory episodes and to prevent future complications such as obstructions, infections, and perforations of the colon.  It is also important to protect joints from damage due to inflammation. Around 70% of patients with Crohn’s disease need surgery because of these complications. The first step is to determine what is causing the immune system to attack the gastrointestinal tissues. Diagnostic tests that can help to determine what the obstacles are include food allergy testing and a comprehensive stool analysis with parasitology.  Studies have shown that removal of food sensitivities extends remission time and promotes joint health.

This has been the most beneficial program I've ever engaged myself in... I benefited so well that I tell my friends, neighbors, and other doctors of this plan to pass the word on. And also helpful were the key speakers as they were very excellent in presenting the information and the consultants were always available and helpful in answering my questions. Unlike other eating/exercise programs, this program provided me with the help, knowledge, and support I needed that could keep me disciplined as I focused on changing my health. This program helped me feel under control of my health…kept me empowered to take action each step of the way. If you need help getting your health back in shape, this program is an awesome way to do that. The program taught me about how to get my health back naturally. I feel better than I've ever felt before. I lowered my A1C numbers by over 3 points on my program. The way things are going, I see myself getting off my meds and living diabetes-free as a foreseeable possibility

– Darlene A.

The... wellness program gave me the information to make healthy choices for eating, exercising, and stress-management. The testing portion of the program provided individualized information on the current state of my health which I am relying on as I continue my recovery during and after treatment for early stage breast cancer. With the knowledge I have gained through the program, I am moving forward in enabling my body to heal and thrive with targeted supplements and healthy lifestyle choices so I am able to live my Best Life
